Study Hub progress

In September - October 2018 we ran a Trial of the Wuyagiba Study Hub. Over 4 weeks students, Elders, local staff, families and Macquarie University staff camped at Wuyagiba oustation. A new learning space was erected and an intensive pre-University skills course was delivered by Elders and Macquarie Uni teaching staff. Course content was primarily based on local cultural knowledge and University skills were built around the cultural learning. Cultural lessons included those on identity, kinship, looking after Country, fire, bush food and medicine and local governance. University skills included use of the Microsoft Office package (word, excel, powerpoint), new video editing software to make a short film, a business plan and budget, essay writing, note taking, running meetings and time management. These skills are transferable to other life pursuits including students’ current and future employment. Over the course students completed 7 assessment tasks including a 1000 word essay and 14 students graduated.

Following the intensive on-Country course, students traveled back to Ngukurr where a graduation ceremony as held and the students gave presentations to the community and senior school classes. Graduating students then went on a ‘tertiary study options tour’ including to Batchelor Institute for Indigenous Tertiary Education (Batchelor, NT), Charles Darwin University (Darwin, NT) and then on to Macquarie University in Sydney where they sat Alternative Entrance interviews. Students are eagerly awaiting the outcomes of these interviews and staff will soon re-engage students to discuss their future career and study pathways. For more information on the Course activities and outcomes see the short films and media links below.
